If you believe that your jaw is broken, have difficulty swallowing, or have trouble breathing because of severe swelling, then seek treatment from the emergency room. Keep in mind that they are not able to perform routine dental procedures. Dentists may treat other emergencies such as infections, broken or chipped teeth, or replacing or repairing a lost filling or crown.
The 3-3-3 rule is a way to temporarily treat pain for a severe toothache. This method involves taking three 200mg tablets of ibuprofen, three times each day over the space of eight hours. Do this over three days until you are able to see an emergency dentist, as this is not a cure for the root issue of a toothache.
Until you can see a dentist for treatment, take care of facial swelling by applying a cold compress to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time. Then, remove the compress for 15 minutes. Keep repeating the process until swelling begins to diminish, or until you can see the dentist.
To remove debris or bacteria, you may try gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. If you do not have broken or chipped teeth, you may also be able to try carefully flossing. You may take over-the-counter pain medication for temporary pain relief, but be careful not to apply aspirin directly to the gums, as chemical burns could result.
