Our patient care team can often schedule an appointment on the same day for you to be evaluated by an emergency dentist. Some cases may need a follow-up appointment, but many patients receive the treatment they need in the same visit. We are dedicated to relieving pain and other symptoms and helping you function normally again as quickly as possible.

When you check in at our office, our friendly staff can assess your pain and determine the root cause using X-rays or other tests as needed. Then, a dentist can create your treatment plan to address your problems and reduce your pain, whether that means medication, filling a cavity, repairing or replacing damaged dental work, or other dental procedures. We often treat common issues such as:

  • Toothaches. This is the general term used for any pain in or around teeth. Toothaches can be caused by injuries, tooth decay, or infections, and it is common for pain to range from a little sensitivity to pain that throbs or radiates out to the jaw or ear. Appropriate treatment and pain management can depend on the cause of the toothache.
  • Tooth decay (cavities). This involves a hole in the enamel of a tooth where bacteria can enter and eat away at the healthy tooth, widening the cavity and often resulting in pain, infection, swelling, and additional damage to teeth. Treatment includes removing the decayed part of the tooth, cleaning the rest, and using a durable filling material to pack the cavity to prevent further spread of decay or infection.
  • Abscessed tooth. This is a swollen, red spot at the base of a tooth where the tooth or gums are infected. Abscesses can lead to sensitivity, soreness, or throbbing pain at the site. Treatment requires evaluating how bad the infection is and then draining the abscess or treating the infection with antibiotics. If the infection is bad enough, a root canal may be needed, or you may have to come back for a filling or extraction after taking the antibiotics.
  • Other infections. This includes soreness, swelling, and bad breath caused by overgrowth of bacteria, virus, or fungal infection, often related to tooth decay. Untreated infections can spread to other areas of the mouth and potentially cause long-term or permanent damage. Treatment may include antibiotics and other procedures to resolve the cause of the infection.
  • Damaged or lost teeth or dental work. Teeth and dental work, like fillings, crowns, and dentures can become damaged or come loose over time due to trauma from an accident, injury, tooth decay, or even just biting something hard, like ice. This may not cause any pain in some cases, and in others, it can cause severe pain, swelling, infection, and damage to nearby teeth and soft tissue. Treatment includes repairing or replacing the damaged tooth or previous restoration.

Objects lodged in gums or teeth. seeds and other small pieces of food, as well as non-food objects like plastic, can become lodged in between teeth or under the gums. When the object can’t be removed with normal tools like floss or a toothbrush, the area can become inflamed or infected, and you’ll need a dentist to remove the object and treat symptoms or other complications caused by the item being stuck.

What Is (and Isn’t) a Dental Emergency

When a dental problem causes pain, bleeding, and swelling, it can make it hard to engage in everyday activities like talking, eating, and sleeping. However, not every painful dental problem is an emergency. Read on for guidelines to help you determine whether a dental problem needs emergency treatment or if it may be able to wait for a weekday appointment.

In rare cases, dental problems can become life-threatening. If you experience any of the following serious symptoms, it is essential to seek emergency dental care right away:

  • Severe bleeding that does not stop or slow down considerably after 15-30 minutes
  • Intense swelling in the soft tissue that makes it hard to breathe or swallow
  • Broken bones, fractures, or other serious injuries to the mouth or face

Dental problems that are urgent but not life-threatening generally involve severe pain or drastically limiting your ability to function. If you have any of the following symptoms, schedule an appointment with an emergency dentist.

  • Extreme pain that does not improve after taking the recommended amount of common pain medicine like Tylenol or Advil
  • A tooth that is loose came out, or has a sharp piece that could injure the nearby gums or other teeth
  • Lost or damaged dental work, like fillings, crowns, braces, and dentures or those that have loose or sharp parts that could injure other teeth or soft tissue

Most dental problems do not need immediate treatment, but even when that is the case, it is important to get treated as soon as you can in order to prevent further complications like infections, decay spreading to roots or other teeth, or long-term problems. If you have any of the following symptoms, you may be able to wait and schedule an appointment with your regular dentist:

  • Pain and swelling that respond to home treatment
  • Loose baby teeth for a child
  • A broken tooth or cavity that is not causing intense pain, swelling, bleeding, or damage to other teeth or tissue
  • Dentures, crowns, fillings, and other dental work that is loose or worn but functional and does not cause serious issues
  • Taking out stitches after dental surgery, extraction, or other procedure

If you still feel unclear about whether you need emergency dental services, contact our emergency patient care team to help you determine if you need an appointment with a Cleveland weekend emergency dentist.

What Causes Dental Emergencies?

A lot of activities people participate in every day have the potential to cause damage to the mouth or teeth. Other factors can also contribute, such as chronic health conditions like acid reflux, not brushing and flossing properly, or drinking a lot of sugary sodas. Other common reasons for dental emergencies include:

  • Injuries from falls, bicycle or motor vehicle crashes, workplace accidents, or sports and recreational activities, especially those with a lot of contact like football, basketball, or hockey
  • Cuts, contusions, and impact damage from hard or sharp food, biting hard objects like ice, or using teeth as tools to open bottles or other packages
  • Infection from previous injuries, tooth decay, or gum disease such as gingivitis
  • Dental work like surgery, tooth extraction, or a root canal; or damage to previous dental restorations or appliances

Treating Dental Problems Until Your Appointment

If your dental problem is not severe enough to potentially be life-threatening, you may want to try treating your symptoms at home. Even if you make an appointment right away, you may still have a few hours to deal with the pain, swelling, and other uncomfortable symptoms before you can see the dentist.

The first step is to evaluate your symptoms. Some common symptoms are swollen gums or face, bleeding, pain in or around the teeth, gums, jaw, sinuses, or ear, sensitivity to heat or cold, and bad breath or dry mouth that isn’t improved by brushing your teeth. Next, try to locate the source of the symptoms. Look for damaged or missing teeth, sores or cuts on cheeks, gums, or tongue, or discoloration of teeth or soft tissue in the mouth.

When you know the symptoms and their likely cause, try treatment at home. Make sure to be gentle and don’t prod the sore or bleeding areas, or you may increase the pain and swelling. If a treatment makes the pain or swelling worse, stop right away and reach out to an emergency dentist's office.

  • Bleeding. Apply sterile gauze using firm but gentle pressure to the cut or site.
  • Swelling. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (make sure not to swallow the saltwater). A cold compress or ice pack on the outside of the cheek can also reduce swelling.
  • Pain. Rinsing with warm salt water or using an ice pack on the cheek can also reduce pain. In addition, you can try over-the-counter pain medicine like Advil or Tylenol.

You can keep brushing and flossing as long as you are gentle and stay away from the damaged or painful area. Avoid the following: hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks; chewing on a broken tooth; smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco.

These home treatments are not permanent or even long-term solutions. They are only a temporary way to minimize discomfort until you can see a dentist to resolve the underlying issue. Delaying treatment more than necessary can make symptoms worse, as well as increase infection, spread decay, and potentially cause permanent damage to bone or soft tissue.
